Yeast infection - causes and treatment
Yeast infections or candidiasis is one of the main causes of vagina or vulva irritation. Candidiasis is caused by yeast-like fungi Candida albicans. According to the statistics, nearly 75% of women will have vaginal candidiasis at least once in their lives. It is normal to have some candida on the surface of the vagina mucous linings. The amount of yeast is usually is balanced. However, in case of certain circumstances like hormonal changes, antibiotics therapy, changes in vaginal acidity this balance can be lost and provoke the overgrowth of candida infection. Also the following risk factors may contribute to yeast infections overgrowth:
- Immune deficiency conditions
- Overloads and stress
- Diabetes
- Application of hormonal medications
- Wearing of tight or synthetic linen
- Sexual contact with infected person
The most common symptoms of yeast infections include:
- Painful sensation during urination
- Painful sensation during sexual intercourse
- Vaginal irritation, itching or burning
- Irritation, redness and itching of the vulva
- Vaginal discharges which look like while cottage cheers.
In most cases vaginal discharges don't have bad odor. The symptoms of vaginal yeast infections can be similar to other vaginal infections. The diagnosis of yeast infection is based on your doctor's examination and laboratory analysis of a swan taken from the affected area.
The treatment of yeast infection include the application of antifungal medicines available in different pharmaceutical formulations:
- Tablets or capsules which are taken orally
- Suppositories, certain creams used vaginally
- Cream and ointments used locally
The most widespread anti-fungal drugs include:
- Fluconazole
- Butaconazole
- Ketoconazole
- Itraconazole
- Clotrimazole
- Miconazole
Although these drugs are usually effective against yeast infection, more and more cases of drug resistance occur, especially in women with HIV which receive long-term treatment with antifungal agents.
