Lumigan Eye Drops

Along with decreases eye pressure, Lumigan increases eye lashes growth when applied on the upper eyelid. Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% 3 ml  is also sold under the name latisse intended to treat insufficient growth of eye lashes.Lumigan is a brand name medication made by the pharmaceutical company Allergan. 

Action mechanism:

Lumigan eye drops contain the active ingredient Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution which is prostaglandin derivative. The medication works by improving drainage of fluid from the eye and thus helps decrease high intraocular pressure. By lowering intraocular pressure Bimatoprost prevents damage to the optic nerve. Along with decreasing pressure in the eyes, Bimatoprost stimulate eyelashes growth making them darker, thicker and longer. It is believed that Bimatoprost opthalmic solution activate the growth phase of eyelashes growth, making this phase longer.

Indication:

Bimatoprost is primary prescribed to treat:

  • Open angle glaucoma        
  • Increased eye pressure (ocular hypertension) 

Lumigan eye drops can also be used to increase eyelashes growth.

Make sure to talk to your doctor before applying Lumigan. The standard recommended Lumigan dose to treat increased intraocular pressure is one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If Lumigan is used with the purpose to increase eye lashes growth then of drop is applied (with the aim of special applicator) to the skin of the upper lash line of each eye daily usually before bed.

Contraindications:

Bimatoprost is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:   

  • Inflammatory eye diseases like uveitis and iritis          
  • Reactions of hypersensitivity to Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution         
  • Pregnancy (pregnancy category C)          
  • Breastfeeding          
  • Aphakia (missing lens of eye)

An artificial lens of the eye Lumigan eye drops may cause permanent darkening of the iris and skin darkening around the eyes Bimatoprost can cause hair growth in undesired places Bimatoprost may cause swelling of the macula of the eye

Try to avoid contaminating the tip of the bottle because this may cause bacterial keratitis. 

You should remove your contact lenses before applied this medication. If you develop any eye diseases or are going to have eye surgery, talk to your doctor.

Side effects:

  • Most common Lumigan side effects include: eye itching, redness, irritation, burning.
  • Less common Lumigan side effects include: cataracts, vision problems, darkening of the eye lids, inflammation of the eyelids, Punctuate epithelial keratopathy, increased sensitivity to light, eye strain or fatigue, iris darkening. 

If you develop these or any other Lumigan side effects make sure to consult your doctor.   How Lumigan eye drops can interact with other medicines? The should not be used in combination with Latanoprost (Xalatan) and other eye drops.  

Storage:

The medication should be stored in the original bottle at 2º to 25ºC

    Do I need a prescription? I had one but used it and need to go to opthamologist but will not have the funds for 2 months.
