1. A Brief Guide to Generic Latisse (Bimatoprost) - Everything You Need to Know!

generic latisse bimatoprost bottleGeneric Latisse (bimatoprost) an ingredient added in eye drops - belongs to the class of prostaglandin medicine that affects your hair follicles and improves hair growth as well as making it thicker, darker and longer. It is the only medication approved by FDA to treat hypotrichosis; a condition that causes poor growth and thinning of eyelashes - and to make your eyelashes thicker and longer. It is used to cure age related eye diseases such as increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma caused by increased intraocular pressure that could lead to loss of vision and even blindness. Bimatoprost treats glaucoma by eliminating the intraocular pressure and stopping the pain.

What is Generic Latisse?

Generic Latisse is similar to a natural chemical found in the body called prostaglandin. Latisse helps you grow your eyelashes thicker, longer and darker. It should be taken in strict compliance with directions on the prescription label and with your doctor’s instructions. Don’t change the dosage or the period of use by the doctor without prior medical consultation. This medication cannot be sold without a doctor’s prescription. Common brands of Generic Latisse include Lumigan and Ganfort.

The Latisse Generic Difference

The Generic Latisse solution was originally manufactured by Allergan, a pharmaceutical firm based in Waco. The product was put through clinical tests before becoming the first and only FDA-approved growth treatment of hypotrichosis. For the safety of the public, Generic Latisse has always been a prescription strength product and cannot be purchased without a prescription subject to state regulations. The medicine is only be sold by someone how has a medical or pharmaceutical license that allows selling prescription products.

2.     Action mechanism:

Bimatoprost, the active component of Latisse and generic Latisse, is a structural analogue of prostaglandin. The exact mechanism of action is unknown, but it is assumed that the growth of eyelashes is associated with an increase in the number of eyelashes and duration of the growth phase of the hair follicle.

3.     How to Use Generic Latisse:

Directions for the treatment of Hypotrichosis:

You should use your Generic Latisse eye drops once every night. Before applying the eye drops, make sure that your face is free from makeup and cleaned thoroughly. If you’re using an eyeliner brush to apply the medicine, please ensure that the brush is clean before the application of medicine because by failing to use the applicators correctly, you’re at risk of developing bacterial infection known as keratitis - an eye infection that can cause you blindness.

The medicine should be applied to the base of your upper eyelash. Don't apply to the lower lid and avoid the product touching other areas as this may result in unwanted growth of hairs. Place a single drop of product to the tip of your eyeliner brush or the applicators and draw the brush across your upper eyelashes starting from the inner side to the outer part of your eyelashes. Blot any extra solution with tissue. Protect your fingers from direct contact with either the brush or the bottle-tip to reduce the risk of bacterial infection. You should see a maximum eyelash growth by 12-16 weeks.

Interesting fact about Generic Latisse:

It's an account of how one incredible item prompted another. In 2001, Allergan launched an eye drop solution to treat raised intraocular pressure also known as glaucoma. Besides treatment of glaucoma, numerous patients using this formula started to develop thicker, darker and longer eyelashes. This drove Allergan to research more about the main ingredient of the medication - bimatoprost, particularly to grow lashes. After a clinical study about the effectiveness of using glaucoma for eyelash growth, LATISSE® was endorsed by the FDA in December of 2008.

After the expiration of the patent protection, various manufacturers adopt the medication and sell it in the market under the name of the chemical.

One of the greatest advantages offered by the generic version of latisse is that it is less expensive as compared to the branded version of latisse.

Q: How to decide if you should utilize branded latisse or generic latisse?

Well, this is the type of question you should probably ask your doctor - an eye physician, a dermatologist or a cosmetic surgeon.

However, commonly, if a patient is unable to handle or tolerate the generic version of latisse, or if the generic version of latisse remains ineffective for a patient, then the doctor may be able to contact an insurance organization to cover the branded version of latisse for the patient.

In any case, you’re your own judge. You can determine the best type of latisse, either branded or generic, for you with the help of your doctor only.
