Biseptol pharmacological action

Generic Biseptol is a combined antibacterial medication with possesses a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity. Bactericidal effect of the medication is associated with blocking the biosynthesis of folates in microbial cells. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfanilamide antibiotic which inhibits the conversion of dihydrofolic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid. Without tetrahydrofolic acid bacteria are not able to grow, make proteins and multiply. Generic Biseptol is effective against a wide variety of microorganisms including gram-positives and gram-negatives. Generic Biseptol does not act on Treponema pallidum, Mycoplasma, Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Biseptol Pharmacokinetics:

After administration the medication is completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood circulation. The maximal blood concentration is achieved in 1-4 hours.

Trimethoprim has a good penetration into the cells and tissue of the lungs, kidney, prostate, bile, saliva, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid. Nearly 50% of trimethoprim bind to proteins. Half-life period varies from 8.6 to 17 hours. Trimethoprim is eliminated by kidneys with urine (nearly 50% in unchanged for). Nearly 66% of sulfamethoxazole bind to plasma proteins, and half-life period is 9 to 11 hour. Sulfamethoxazole is mainly eliminated by kidney with urine (15-30% in active form)

Biseptol indications

The drug is used for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible to the co trimoxazole microorganisms:

  • Respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, lung abscess, pleural empyema, otitis media, sinusitis)
  • Meningitis
  • Brain abscess
  • Urinary tract infections (pyelonephritis, urethritis, salpingitis, prostatitis), including gonorrhea
  • Gastrointestinal tract infections (dysentery, cholera, typhoid, paratyphoid, diarrhea)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections (pyoderma, furunculosis)


Generic Biseptol should not be taken in the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim and / or sulfamethoxazole or sulfonamides
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Children
  • Infants
  • Severe cardiovascular diseases
  • Liver diseases
  • Kidney and hematologic diseases
  • Deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase

Bisptol should be used with caution in patients with anemia associated with deficiency of folic acid in the organism, bronchial asthma, a history of allergic reactions

Generic Biseptol dosage and administration

The medication is used orally swallowing whole with sufficient amount of fluids. The dose of the drug should be specified by a health provider. It is not recommended to take the drug without medical consultation. The duration of treatment varies from 5 to 14 hours. In prolonged treatment (longer than 5 days) you should regularly control you blood picture.

Biseptol drug interaction

The drug is not recommended to take in conjunction with thiazide diuretics because of the risk of thrombocytopenia (bleeding). Co trimoxazole increases the anticoagulant activity of warfarin and the anticonvulsant action of phenytoin. Trimethoprim potentiates the action of antidiabetic drugs such as sulfonylureas derivatives. Rifampicin reduces the half-life of trimethoprim. Concomitant application of co trimoxazole and cyclosporin after surgeries s on the kidneys worsens the condition of patients.

It is not recommended the simultaneous use of the drug with salicylates, butadione, naproxene and para-aminobenzoic acid derivatives.

Generic Biseptol side effects

The drug is generally well tolerated. The most common Biseptol side effects include: headache, depression, dizziness.

In rare cases Biseptol may cause: nausea, vomiting, and other dysfunctions of the gastrointestinal tract including diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis cholestatic hepatitis), skin rashes (including polymorphonuclear Bullous erythema, Stevens-Johnson, toxic epidermal necrolysis Lyell),

Kidney dysfunction (hematuria, nephritis)

Hematopoietic systems (leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, megaloblastic anemia).

Biseptol overdose systems: Generic Biseptol may cause nausea, vomiting, fainting.
