Therapeutic action

Bactroban ointment (mupirocin) is a broad spectrum antibiotic for local applications obtained from the fermentation of Pseudomonas fluorescens. Bactroban possesses bacteriostatic action against the majority of microorganisms that cause dermatological infections.
Bactroban reversibly and specifically binds to isoleucyl tRNA synthetase (isoleucyl-transfer RNA synthetase), which leads to suppression of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell. Bactroban ointment acts on the majority of gram-negative anaerobes. Bactroban shows no cross-resistance to other antibiotics: hloramphenicol, erythromycin, fusidic acid, gentamicin, lincomycin, methicillin, neomycin, novobiotsinom, streptomycin, tetracycline.
Bactroban ointment does not act on Corynebacterium spp., Enterobacteriaceae spp., Nonfermentative gram-negative bacillus, Micrococcus spp., as well as anaerobic bacteria.
