Astelin nasal spray is a medicine that is prescribed for treating a complex of seasonal allergic and non-allergic nasal symptoms such as rhinorrhea(running nose), nasal congestion, itching of the nasal mucous lining and sneezing. Astelin nasal spray is effective both in allergic and vasomotor rhinitis.
Astelin nasal spray is an antihistamine preparation that works by preventing the effects of histamine on the blood vessels of the nasal cavity. Astelin acts in two different ways. At first Azesatine prevents the release of histamine from the mast cells and then prevents the binding of histamine to certain receptors. However, how Astelin works in vasomotor rhinitis remains unknown.
Astelin mod of administration
Astelin is available on the pharmaceutical market in the form of nasal spray. Astelin nasal spray is usually taken two times daily. If you use Azelastine for the first time you need to replace the screw cap on the bottle with the pump unit. Then you will have to prime the pump unit by spraying till a fine mist occurs. You should breathe in gently while inhaling Astelin nasal spray into your nose.
Astelin precaution and warning
Before taking Astelin you should consult and let your health care provider know if you have ever experienced allergy or reactions of hypersensitivity to Astelin nasal spray compounds.
Astelin should not be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Astelin nasal spray is a pregnancy category C meaning that it is unsafe to use it while pregnancy.
Do not use Astelin nasal spray by mouth and avoid contact of spray with eyes and skin mucous lining.
Do not operate any machinery while taking Astelin nasal spray.
Astelin side effects
There are no known severe side effects associated with Astelin. Astelin side effects usually are common for people with hypersensitivity or allergy to Astelin components. Astelin is usually well tolerated and side effects occur in rare cases. The most common Astelin side effects include: bitter taste, headache, and dizziness, drowsiness, running nose, sore throat, nasal bleedings, sinus infections, dry mouth, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and weigh gain. Seek medical attention if you experienced any significant Astelin side effects.
You should let your doctor know if you are taking any medicines including prescription(RX), over-the-counter preparations(OTC) or herbal supplements. Astelin may interact with the following remedies:
Alcohol. Alcoholic beverages may increase the risk of Astelin side effects.
Barbiturates increase the risk of drowsiness when used together with Azelastine
Cimetidine may increase Astelin blood levels. This may result in increased risk of Astelin side effects.
Do not combine Astelin with other antihistamines and hormone agents(opioids).
