Actuality of problem and Description of problem

Cold sores refer to the occurring  of blister  near the lips, face and oral cavity (in medical terms, it is known as herpes labialis). It is because of virus infection and the name of the virus is known as Herpes simplex virus (virus are very minute infectious agents, which are responsible for a variety of diseases and are highly harmful to the body). Herpes simplex virus is generally of two types and type 1 is commonly responsible for cold sores. Type 2 is generally responsible for causing genital sores.

In cold sore, before the blister occur near the lips or face, typically tingling and numbness sensation occur and this should be taken as a warning sign for the symptoms to be followed. Unfortunately, there is no drug as of today, which is available for stopping the occurrence of the blisters at this stage. The blister gets swollen and after it has grown big, it usually burst developing into ulcer. Ulcer gets healed by about a week or so and in many of the cases subside without any complication. There will be recurrent infection because this virus has the peculiar property of traveling through the nerves and get stored in some parts of the nerve in the body (this is very fascinating as this is a virus which has a peculiar property of resting in some parts of a body like without causing any symptoms). This occurrence of symptoms again is known as the recurrence of the symptom.

Why is Valacyclovir good for that problem?

Valcyclovir is one of the approved drugs for the treatment of cold sores. This drug comes under the trade name of Valtrex manufactured by  GlaxoSmithKline, which is one of the big companies of the world. There is also a generic variant of the drug available in the market. Valcyclovir is better than acyclovir that, it  attains higher levels in the blood (in fact, this drug is related to acyclovir, in medical terms, this is known as prodrug).

What is Valacyclovir and how it resolves the problem?

This drug then gets activated by means of the addition of some groups known as phosphate. A single phosphate will be added with the help of viral thymidine kinase (just remember that this is the name of the enzyme, present in the virus) The remaining added phosphate has been by cellular kinases (an enzyme in the human cell). Then this activated phosphate added molecule will get inserted into the DNA of the virus, thereby stopping its replication.

This drug will not be helpful in preventing the development of blisters, at the stage of occurrence of tingling sensation, but this drug will be helpful in reducing the extent of symptoms. It should however be noted that the drug needs to be taken at the earliest, near the time of occurrence of tingling sensation. The usual dose taken is  2 grams  in a single day separated by 12 hour interval. Please consider the physician, for the right dosing which will be appropriate for you and also for the selection of drug. In patients, who are high risk of getting infected, the drug will be helpful in preventing the development of infection (along with the presence of prevention measures like a condom).

Conclusion (Cold sores Treatment results)?

On taking Valcyclovir, you will be noting a definite reduction in the intensity of swelling and also redness of the swelling.  It is always advisable to take the drug as soon as possible and as early as possible as the initial symptom for the blisters occur. The blister will turn into non painful masses which will disappear quicker than usual.
